Even with only one day in the city, you can fit in a lot of fun. Rose gardens, one of the world's largest bookstores, and so, so much amazing food, including Blue Star Donuts (which are delicious and far superior to Voodoo!).

If you're headed to Oregon soon, be sure to check out my post on the best things to do with one day in Portland (link in bio). And then spend the rest of your trip exploring the amazing nature the state has to offer!
Hiking in the middle of a city? Forest Park in P Hiking in the middle of a city?

Forest Park in Portland, OR has such impressive scenery throughout its 80+ miles of trails and is less than a 15-minute drive from downtown.

For a short hike with enough elevation change to make it interesting but not too challenging, check out Lower MacLeay Trail to the “Witch’s Castle.”

For a long hike, go as far as you’d like on the 30.2-mile Wildwood Trail!
The Oregon coast is unreal! It’s exactly what I The Oregon coast is unreal! It’s exactly what I pictured it looking like.

There are many gorgeous spots and you really can’t go wrong, but my favorite spot was Indian Beach at Ecola State Park. The combination of beach and forest and fog was beautiful and so serene.

Shoutout to @orientyourmap for the suggestion!
Chairlifts are not just for skiing! Many ski res Chairlifts are not just for skiing!

Many ski resorts have a summer lift open to help you access on-mountain hiking. Even if you don't want to hike, take a relaxing ride and enjoy the view from up above.

Just be sure to check the opening and closing dates - many don't open until June and close at the beginning of September.

Some of my favorite are:

▪️Whistler, BC (peak-to-peak gondola traveling between two mountains)

▪️Vail, CO (amazing restaurants at the top)

▪️Aspen, CO (sitting in a rocking chair overlooking one of the most incredible views is like heaven on earth to me)

▪️Banff National Park (there are several!)

▪️Sundance, Utah (the longest and cheapest ride I’ve taken)

▪️Keystone, CO (live music and lawn games at the top on certain days)

Have you visited a ski resort in the off-season? Which one is your favorite?
When did we stop doing anything just for the fun o When did we stop doing anything just for the fun of it?

As one of my favorite podcasters/authors @anniefdowns pointed out in her new book, That Sounds Fun, we are often too quick to lose the fun in things by chasing a potential profit. While there’s nothing wrong with leveraging your skills and passions to make some extra money, Annie argued there’s beauty and purpose in some things being purely just for fun.

I never had the goal of being a full-time blogger, but I have definitely spent way too many hours over the past nine months trying to build a perfect website, crack the Instagram algorithm, etc. thinking that maybe, eventually, I could land sponsorship deals and make some money to make my effort "worth it."

And it stopped being fun. And I didn’t touch my blog or Instagram for over a month.

But the thing is – this was supposed to be a hobby. For me, there’s joy in simply being a resource. The effort is worth it if I know I have helped someone plan an amazing trip or get inspired to visit a new place.

That’s how it used to be, pre-Type A Getaway – I would spend hours writing up emails (practically short novels!) anytime someone asked for recommendations in a place I had visited. I wanted to share my knowledge because I knew it would help them out – not because I thought I might get something out of it.

So, here's to having FUN again and doing things just for the joy of doing them. That's what I'll be doing on here and on my blog. That means I may not be as active or consistent as other bloggers going forward, but I am excited to simply be a resource with no further agenda. I know that will bring me joy!

I hope you all have something in your lives currently that is purely just for fun as well. Let me know in the comments if you do - I'd love to get some new hobby ideas for myself!
...
In other news, it is a personal pet peeve when a photo has absolutely nothing to do with a caption, haha. So, to tie it in - I highly recommend Sundance Resort near Park City, Utah, in the summer. Be sure to check out their awesome zip line if you've got an adventurous spirit!
Would you eat at an expensive restaurant with an h Would you eat at an expensive restaurant with an hours-long wait just for the view?

Personally, I would not! 😂 We tried to go to the highly-recommended Haleiwa Joe’s Haiku Gardens in Oahu, but we arrived less than ten minutes after they opened for dinner (at 4:40pm), and I could not believe how many people were already there!

We discovered the gardens below the restaurant are free and are open to the public. The view was just as good, we didn’t have to wait, and we saved money. A win win win.

If you do choose to eat here, your whole party should plan to arrive 15 minutes before they open.

Which would you choose? Stroll through the gardens 🌳 , or dinner with a view 🍽?
